The Players
Members of the Worcester Wiffleball League (WWL) are permitted to play.  Players under 18 must have a permission slip signed by their parents/guardian allowing them to play.  Players play at their own risk.

The Field
The field is a standard Little League field, softball field or equivalent grass area where base hits are designated by areas on the field. The pitching mound is located approximately 15 steps from home plate. The strike zone is represented as a lawn chair 1 step behind the plate. A pitch to the backrest, seat, and arms of the chair is a strike, and the legs of the chair are not. There are designated areas on the field that determine a single, double, triple, and home run.  Cones are used to outline the field.

Equipment
Standard wiffleballs used in games are described as the trademark Wiffle® balls.  Other kinds of balls are not permitted.
Two kinds of bats are permitted:
1.  The trademark yellow Wiffle® bat.
2.  The black official size plastic bat no longer than 33”.

Other kinds of bats are not permitted without prior approval.  Bats must be hollowed (not filled with a foreign substance) and cannot be altered in any way on the bat barrel.

Players
At least 4 players per team (two teams per game) are required to play a game.  Teams can choose captains, or “acting managers”.  They determine the batting order and starting pitcher.

Game Play
Games are played in 5 innings.  Teams are determined TBD.

No game shall start after 7:30pm on account of the sun setting during a game.

Pitching
This league is slow to medium speed pitching, no fireballs please.  A starting pitcher must pitch at least 3 innings to claim a win.  A pitcher cannot make two consecutive starts, and once a pitcher is relieved from the game, he/she cannot return to pitch in the same game.

A closer can only pitch for the save when the tying run is “in the hole” or 3rd to bat in the 5th inning.  Pitchers can be relieved by the team captain (acting manager), but a pitcher cannot be relieved during an at-bat.

Both balls and strikes are called.  Three strikes is an out, and 4 balls is a walk.  A pitching change must occur after 5 walks and there are no intentional walks.

Batting/Scoring
Bunting is not permitted.  Base hitting is determined by the following:

    * Single:  A ball hit in the single area and then goes past the double’s line is a grounder and is a live ball until it stops.  Also, a grounder that hits the single area and rolls past the infield (HR area), before it is touched, is a single.  If the ball hits in the single area and stops before it is fielded, it is ruled a single.

    * Double:  a ball hit between the double’s line and the triple’s line (infield dirt)

    * Triple:  a ball hit in the little league infield (dirt).

    * Homerun:  a ball hit to the outfield (past the dirt)

This league plays with “ghost runners” and runners must be forced in.  For example, a runner on 3rd cannot score on a single, but can on a triple.

Mercy Rule: During a blowout game, if a team is down by 10 runs or more after the 3rd inning, that team has one inning to make a comeback.  If that team is still down by 10 runs or more after 3 outs in that inning, then a forfeit is issued by the loosing team and the game is over.

Fielding/Errors/Web gems
Minimum of 3 fielders, not including the pitcher, are required to play the field.  A ball caught prior to hitting the ground is an out.

Grounders that are fielded cleanly are outs.  The ball must bounce on the single field area to be a grounder.    If a grounder or a fly ball is dropped by the fielder, it is ruled an error and the batter is awarded first, second, or third depending on the position of the fielder.

Errors:  If a grounder or a fly ball is dropped by the fielder, it is ruled an error and the batter is awarded first, second, or third depending on the position of the fielder.  Errors are committed when the fielder cannot make the play on a routine out, whether the ball is touched or not.  However, if a ball is touched and hits the HR area, it is ruled a homerun and not an error.  Pitchers cannot have errors.

Webgems are rewarded to fielders, including pitchers, who make spectacular plays on the field.  Webgems are rewarded by the Wiffleboard.

Double Play Rule: When a runner is on 1st, 1st and 2nd, or 1st 2nd and 3rd with less than 2 outs, the double play rule is in effect.  When ball is grounded, or caught on a line drive to a fielder, but not a fly ball, the fielder can take one step (in one motion) and throw the ball to the chair.  If the ball hits any part of the chair, the batter and the lead runner are out.

Tag-up Fly Rule (Sac Fly): If there is a runner on 3rd with less than 2 outs, a batter that hits a “pop-up” can call “Tag-up” while the ball ascending for the runner on 3rd base to score the run.  If the fielder catches the ball, s/he can take one step (in one motion) and throw the ball to the chair.  In addition, the fielder can relay throw to the pitcher (only if s/he is on the mound) as the cut-off person and then the pitcher can throw to the chair.  If the ball hits any part of the chair, the batter and the runner on 3rd are out.

Disputes/Disciplinary Actions
The WWL promote a safe environment where players can enjoy their passion for wiffleball.  The official ruling of a play by the Wiffleboard is final.  Disorderly conduct and unacceptable behavior will not be tolerated.  If any player causes a disturbance or harasses other players, he/she will be thrown out.

Other disciplinary actions, such as suspensions or banishment from the league, will be placed under investigation by the Head of Discipline and approved by the Wiffleboard.
